LAB – Laboratory for cultural education
The LAB transforms the Kunsthalle Barmen into a research facility of the University of Wuppertal, offering workshops, lectures, artist talks, and much more: providing direct access to contemporary art. The LAB is active, creative, and responsive, responding to current politics, contemporary issues, and current exhibitions.
The LAB creates a cross-generational meeting place for the city’s residents, schoolchildren, visitors to the Kunsthalle Barmen, students of the University of Wuppertal, and the exhibiting artists. It is an interdisciplinary teaching and learning center for cultural, political, and individual education.

The LAB is aimed at a diverse audience: educational institutions, social initiatives, institutions, and the general public. There are regular formats for families, children, young people, and adults – such as our Family &Friends Afternoons.
